Andrew Salmon (Mental Health Accredited Social Worker)

Clinician

Background:

Andrew is a Mental Health Accredited Social Worker who studied at Flinders University. He has 24 years experience in clinical roles. Andrew has a special interest in working with young people, where he has spent most of his time working for headspace as well as SA Health.

Andrew has a keen interest in working with Dads being a dad himself to a 9-year-old with a rare medical condition. Being a dad was a bumpy start for me. It’s the most important thing youll ever do as a man. Andrew also has a keen interest in Aboriginal Health having worked in a variety of settings for Aboriginal Community Controlled health services in Victoria and South Australia

When not working Andrew enjoys playing the didgeridoo, yoga, listening to heavy metal music, reading, Test cricket, Graphic novels and connecting with his daughtercats and family.

Special Interests:

  • Youth
  • Dads
  • Indigenous health
  • I use a variety of clinical approaches to help people.

Motivational Interviewing is the backbone of my practice because it:

  • Helps people develop insight into their own lives and behaviour patterns
  • Supports positive life changes (e.g., reducing alcohol and drug use)

I also use a Family Inclusive approach when working with young people:

  • The parent perspective is always important
  • The young person remains the primary focus of the conversation
  • Dads & Fatherhood:
  • Expectations of fatherhood have changed significantly
  • Previously, it was seen as something you were expected to “just know how to do”
  • Today’s dads are expected to be hands-on and involved in all aspects of parenting

If you are struggling with fatherhood — feeling lost, unsure, or overwhelmed — I can help you:

  • Improve your relationship with your child, regardless of their age
  • Dads’ mental health matters but often isn’t well understood.

I can help you:

  • Recognize your own patterns of distress
  • Find healthier ways to cope
  • A strong predictor of a child’s wellbeing is how well parents understand themselves and manage stress.

Indigenous Health-Rosemary Wanganeen’s 7 Phases to Integrating Loss and Grief model in finding ways to help Aboriginal people to reclaim their lives from the effects of colonisationracism and other stresses.
