Background
Divisions of General Practice was established by the Federal Government in 1992 in response to the General Practice Reform Strategy.
GPs were invited to form networks (Divisions), resulting in approximately 111 Divisions created in Australia. Opportunities to network with other GPs, Service Providers and the Community meant that GPs were better able to manage the increasing complexities and changes within Primary Care. General Practice SA (GPSA) was established as the peak body for the Divisions.
With a rapidly changing environment, on 1 March 2013 the Directors of the Adelaide Hills Division of General Practice resolved to use the trading name ‘Summit Health’ and provide a broader membership base encompassing all facets of Primary Care.
This led to creating the vision for Summit Health: Leading integrated health and wellbeing solutions, reinvesting into the community.
In July 2018, agreement was reached to merge General Practice SA (GPSA) into Summit Health.
In 2019 the Membership formally adopted the name ‘Summit Health’ and relinquished the ‘Adelaide Hills Division of General Practice’ name.
