GPSA

The GPSA Unit of Summit Health was formed in July 2018 following a merger between General Practice SA Inc and Summit Health.

General Practice SA was established 20 years ago as the state peak body for the old Divisions of General Practice network. When this network ceased to be funded by the Commonwealth following the creation of Medicare Locals (now also deceased) GPSA created a new direction. In recent years this was focussed on operating the state-based Mental Health Shared Care service and the Health Provider Registry (HPRy) along with additional services such as practice staff training. In 2018, agreement was reached to merge General Practice SA (GPSA) into Summit Health to create the GPSA Unit.

The GPSA Unit – consistent with its history as a peak support service – provides internal services to Summit Health (member support, media and communications, etc.) and external services to funders and the broader community. Specifically, GPSA provides greater capacity for Summit Health to broaden its service base and seek funding for services that are either slightly peripheral to primary care or are located outside our core region. Some of these are listed below:

  • Former Divisions Network – Network and business planning support to the 6 former Divisions that still operate in SA
  • Health Provider Registry – Accessible only by other professionals, the Health Provider Registry enables secure and confidential patient information to be communicated state-wide.
  • Registry Select – Registry Select provides health-related information from credible health services and organisations to healthcare professionals
  • HEAL program  – Delivering Healthy Eating Activity and Lifestyle education and support across the Hills, Mallee, Fleurieu and KI
  • Integrated Wellbeing Service – Proactive chronic disease prevention services in Kangaroo Island
  • Hills Radio – a monthly FM radio health broadcast that links the community to topical health issues delivered by local clinicians
  • Services Directory  – development of a country SA-wide web-based directory that links consumers with services in their area
