Born and educated in Adelaide, Dr van Essen also completed his orthopaedic training in Adelaide, before undertaking further training in knee and hip surgery completing a Fellowship in knee arthroscopy and revision arthroplasty, in Exeter, UK and a Fellowship in knee and hip arthroplasty, in Toronto, Canada and further fellowship training in arthroscopic and sports surgery, Ontario, Canada.
He is the former Director and Head of Unit and current Head of Arthroplasty Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (CALHN).
Service Overview
Dr van Essen is involved in research on knee and hip surgery outcomes with a special interest in implant biomechanics, patient specific instrumentation and new techniques.
Specialising in sports injury (including arthroscopic and ACL surgery), joint replacement and revision (arthroplasty) of the knee and hip. Dr van Essen consults at the Summit Health Centre twice a month and operates at Mt Barker Hospital monthly.
