Dr Andrew Philpott

MBBS FRACP

Professional Profile

Dr Philpott is an interventional cardiologist with a special interest in ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and heart failure. Dr Andrew Philpott studied Medicine at the University of Adelaide, before completing physician training through the Royal Adelaide and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals. He was awarded the FRACP in Cardiology in 2001.

Following some research into cardiac pharmacology with the University of Adelaide, Andrew spent several enjoyable years in Canada failing to learn how to ski and avoiding bears, whilst completing coronary angioplasty training at the University of Calgary in Canada, incorporating research interests in endothelial function and coronary stent outcomes.

Andrew returned to Adelaide in 2007 and commenced practice at SA Heart and as a senior staff specialist at the Lyell McEwin Hospital.  He consults regularly at our Ashford, Norwood, St Agnes, Stirling and Mount Barker locations.

Dr Tapash Bakshi

MBBS FRACP FCSANZ PhD

Professional Profile

Dr Tapash Bakshi is an interventional cardiologist with expertise in percutaneous coronary interventions and CT coronary angiography.

Dr Bakshi graduated from Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh in 1985 and pursued his postgraduate training in Cardiology at the Ukrainian Strazhesko Research Institute of Cardiology, Kiev, Ukraine. In 1994 he was awarded his PhD in Medicine.

Dr Bakshi joined Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand before transferring to Greenlane Hospital Auckland, NZ where he completed his Advanced Cardiology training in 2004. He was awarded clinical fellowship in Interventional cardiology at Vancouver General Hospital, Canada, in association with the University of British Columbia and in 2004 Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).

In early 2007 Dr Bakshi completed advanced training in CT coronary angiography in White Plains, New York, USA.

Dr Bakshi consults regularly from our Ashford, Mount Barker and Norwood locations.

Dr Chuks Ajaero

MBBS FMCP FRACP PhD

Professional Profile

Dr Chukwudiebube (Chuks) Ajaero, is a highly trained and qualified clinical Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist. His special interests include the management of all forms of cardiac arrhythmias, implantable cardiac devices including resynchronisation therapy for heart failure. He is also passionate about preventive cardiology.

Dr Ajaero obtained his MBBS degree from Nigeria in 1997. He subsequently proceeded with postgraduate training and received extensive training in preventative cardiology, management of heart failure as well as management of valvular heart disease. In 2005 Chuks was awarded the Nigerian Fellowship of the Medical College of Physicians in Cardiology.

In 2007 Dr Ajaero commenced further training in Internal Medicine and advanced training in general and invasive cardiology in Australia and in 2012 was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in cardiology.

In 2017 Dr Ajaero undertook further dedicated clinical fellowship in electrophysiology and pacing at Chaim Sheba Medical Centre, Israel with extensive exposure to a wide range of arrhythmias and ablative therapies.

In 2018, Dr Ajaero completed his research of the ‘Interactions between cardiac desynchronisation therapy and the amelioration of peripheral vascular dysfunction: Impact upon outcomes’ and was consequently awarded PhD in Medicine by the prestigious University of Adelaide.

Dr Chuks Ajaero consults regularly at our North Adelaide, Modbury, Ashford, Mt Barker and Findon locations.

Prof William Heddle

AM RFD (retd) MD FRACP FCSANZ FAMA FHRS CCDS GAICD

Professional Profile

Professor  William Heddle is a highly trained and experienced cardiologist and electrophysiologist and has been a pioneer in the development of arrhythmia management. Professor Heddle has been with SA Heart since its inception in 1984.

Prof. Heddle graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1972 where he was awarded the Christopher and John Campbell Prize for first place in Biochemistry. He then went on to postgraduate studies in Obstetrics and Anaesthesia followed by Physician Training in 1974 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Prof. Heddle commenced his cardiology training at the Flinders Medical Centre in 1977 and he was the first trainee in cardiac electrophysiology in SA. Since then, his training has been directed towards furthering his expertise in management of arrhythmias.

This has included research performed both in Australia and The Netherlands into the diagnosis, mechanisms and management of arrhythmias. Prof. Heddle was awarded his Fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1980, his Doctorate in Medicine in 1985, and Fellowship of the Cardiac Society of Australian and New Zealand (FCSANZ) in 2004. He was granted Fellowship to the Australian Medical Association in 2006.

Prof. Heddle is Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Southern Adelaide Local Health Network, former Associate Dean and Head Flinders Southern Adelaide Clinical School, School of Medicine, Flinders University and currently Senior Clinical Advisor to the MD degree, College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University.

In 2012 Prof. Heddle was awarded Fellowship in the Heart Rhythm Society (FRHS). At that time Prof. Heddle was the ninth Australian and first South Australian to be awarded the FRHS.

Prof. Heddle consults regularly at Ashford, Morphett Vale and Flinders locations as well as Berri, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor. He also visits Mount Barker to provide cardiac device checks for his patients living in the Adelaide Hills region.

Prof. Heddle is the immediate past Chairman of SA Heart.

Dr Eng Lee Ooi (Daryl)

MBBS PhD FRACP FCSANZ FESC

Professional Profile

Dr Eng Lee Ooi (Daryl) graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Adelaide in 2008. He commenced his postgraduate medical training in cardiology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2016.  

Dr Ooi completed further training requirements in cardiac CT at MonashHEART in 2016 and qualified as an advanced level B CT coronary angiography specialist (highest level). He also has a special interest in advanced echocardiography, including stress echocardiography. 

He holds a public hospital appointment at the Lyell McEwin Hospital as a consultant cardiologist specialising in heart failure. He is currently appointed at the University of Adelaide as a clinical senior lecturer. He is a fellow of Cardiac Society of Australian and New Zealand (FCSANZ) and European Society of Cardiology (FESC).

 To further his knowledge and understanding of the relationship with obstructive sleep apnoea and non-invasive assessment prospects with advanced echocardiography, Daryl received the Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship and completed his PhD in ischaemia with no obstructive coronary artery (INOCA). 

Daryl is dedicated to improving the care of cardiac patients and has been actively involved in research, being a research advisor for clinical trials sites, contributing to peer-reviewed publications and being a reviewer as well as regularly attending major cardiovascular meetings and conferences to keep abreast with the latest cardiovascular research findings. 

He is involved with the Coronary Vasomotor Disorder International Study Group (COVADIS) and the CSANZ Coronary Vasomotor Dysfunction Working Group to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with MINOCA and INOCA. 

He has contributed to the Therapeutic Goods Administration as a Specialist Medical Advisor. 

Originally from Penang, Malaysia, Daryl is linguistically fluent in Mandarin and Hokkien. 

Daryl provides regular services at Ashford, Mount Barker and Norwood locations. 

Dr Anthony Chuang

MBBS MMed FRACP FACC

Professional Profile

Dr Anthony Chuang is an interventional and general cardiologist. Anthony studied Medicine at the University of NSW. He subsequently obtained A Master of Medicine at Sydney University and underwent cardiology training at Flinders Medical Centre.

After being admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Cardiology), he undertook a 2-year cardiac intervention and structural heart fellowship at St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada, under the mentorship of Professor John Webb, one of the world-leading pioneers of trans-catheter valve intervention. During his fellowship, Anthony further specialised in cardiac CT and is an accredited Level B CTCA specialist (highest level).

Anthony is dedicated to improving the care of cardiac patients and has been actively involved in research, contributing to over 20 peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of American College of Cardiology, Circulation, and International Journal of Cardiology. He has received multiple awards and recognitions including Finalist for the Young Investigator Competition (ACC), Best Research Student Publication (Flinders University), as well as the RACP Vincent Fairfax and Research Entry Scholarships for two consecutive years (2019, 2020).

In 2019, Anthony collaborated with RACP-SA and developed the first ‘Evidence-based medicine’ educational course in SA, which has become an annual event. He has also been a clinical lecturer at Flinders University for the past 7 years.

Dr Mohammad Omair

MBBS BMedSc FRACP

Professional Profile

Dr Mohammad Omair is a dual trained multi-modality imaging Cardiologist and General Medicine Physician. He has special interests in cardiovascular imaging (TTE, TOE, CT and MRI), non-invasive cardiac testing for ischaemic heart disease, and heart failure management.  

Having graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2011, Mohammad went on to complete his internship at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Sydney followed by Basic Physician Training at Frankston and Alfred Hospital, Melbourne.  His advanced training in General Medicine was completed at Austin Hospital, Melbourne. 

Mohammad undertook his cardiology training at Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane and Lyell McEwin Hospital, Adelaide. Having specialised in cardiac imaging, Mohammad completed his cardiac imaging fellowship at Austin Hospital, Melbourne. To further enhance his skills, he also went on to complete a short fellowship in advanced cardiac imaging (CT and MRI) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (highest volume centre for CT and MRI) in Chicago, USA. 

Over his career, Mohammad has provided mentoring and tutoring services to medical students and has contributed to a multitude of publications and presentations within both the cardiac and medical communities. 

Now settled back in Adelaide, Mohammad opened his private practice in May 2024. In addition to this, Mohammad also holds a public appointment at Lyell McEwin Hospital as an imaging and heart failure consultant cardiologist. He has inpatient rights in all the private hospitals in Adelaide. 

During his non-work hours, Mohammad cherishes time with his young family and is a keen runner with regular participation in Saturday morning Parkruns locally. 

He is fluent in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi. Mohammad will consult regularly at Ashford, Calvery Adelaide, Modbury, Mt Barker, and Norwood clinics.

Medical Consultations

On initial consultation with your Cardiologist  your symptoms will be discussed and a physical examination performed. After consultation further tests may be needed to evaluate your cardiac status. Our cardiologists also provide 24/365 on call cover for the Chest Pain Units at Ashford Community Hospital and Flinders Private Hospital.

Diagnostic Tests

A range of diagnostic tests are available at the Summit Health Centre including;

  • Exercise (treadmill) stress tests
  • ECG
  • Holter monitoring
  • Event monitoring
